The
Tian-Wei Miao Dao pictured has been modelled accurately
to a traditional design and has been hand forged from
1095 high carbon steel, differentially heat treated,
water quenched and clay tempered to produce an extremely tough edge, while allowing the flexiablity of body to absorb the impact during cutting. such unique heat treat method also result the very obvious waved temperline .
The blade has a deep blood groove (filler) the reason
for such design are to minimize the non-necessary weight
of blade and also prevent blade stucked inside enemies'
bodies.
The
full tang extends into a thick ring, pinned into the
handle. The ring was utilized for striking purposes
and if necessary, to tie a loop of cord to assure it
would not be lost in battle. The handle has been hand-wrapped with rattan, which is one of the oldest techniques used on chinese weapons. While rattan wrapping is a difficult job itself and therefore requires higher skills, it does have better durability and is more stylish in traditional fashion.
The miao dao is a unique sword, historically
significant and thus collectable, also making it suitable
as a gift. It is still a practical sword, however, well
balanced and appropriate for martial arts training.
