Kun Wu was originally the name of a sword in the Chou dynasty (1050-256 BC), thought to be one of the best swords in Chinese history. According to legend, this jian could cut through jade like mud. Later on, Kun Wu jian became a famous sword style, difficult to master but well known for it's swift and graceful movements.
The Kun Wu jian as pictured is truly a unique piece; the dimensions of the blade and shape of the hand-guard are accurately based on dimensions from old manuals and crafted exclusively for Enlightenment Swords by the best of our sword making masters. This type of sword was known to be a 'fighting sword', made especially for combat.
The light-weighted compact structure (slimmer blade and shorter handle) of this jian and its perfect four-finger balance make it extremely maneuverable for fast jian techniques. It is easily the fastest jian we carry.
The blade of this jian has been constructed from hand forged folded steel with a high carbon steel insert blade. As high carbon steel was more brittle, it would be supported against breaking by the resilient body of the folded steel, combining a balance of soft and hard for a sharp blade that would not break.
The folding steel process also reveals beautiful patterns from the layers of different steel, folded to what is known as the waterflow style.
The blade is then differentially heat treated using clay to feed carbon into the blade and quenched in water for improved hardness and edge retaining capabilities.

A blood groove runs along either side of the blade and the Enlightenment mark has been engraved on one side during forging, which denotes our quality approval.
The distinctively shaped hand-guard was designed to deflect the oncoming enemy's blade and allow the swordsman to counter-attack with fierce alacrity, minimizing any chance of the blade locking onto the hand-guard. The fittings, hand-guard and pommel are all moulded from high quality antique brass, engraved with a floral pattern from the Tang dynasty.
The handle and scabbard of the kun wu jian have been made from hong mu or 'old Chinese red wood' also known as 'sourwood'.
The true and final signature of the sword's craftsmanship is audible when the sword is drawn, singing a high-pitched ring. The traditional Kun Wu jian would make an excellent gift, historical, cultural and beautifully crafted.
With it's distinguished vintage feel, the Kun Wu jian also has a remarkably perfect balance, giving it the right 'feeling' for any slow or fast martial arts sword practise.
